Please Send me a Postcard

Our first piece of artwork on a postcard. This postcard has been sent in by sisters, Emma and Gemma. The artists is Emma, the scribbler is Gemma! Emma has a website www.heavenandearthart.co.uk (it says on the postcard) so we have some local art for the site today. Bawdsey is famous as the birthplace of Radar in the Second World War and is now a lovely little village that is crumbling into the sea. It is also one of my favourite places in Suffolk.

Onto the tip,

Well, I am delighted to report we are now getting a good variety of postcards in, form the UK and across Europe. We have had two ‘non travel’ postcards (Socialist & Ewan) which are making me smile and we have our first piece of art going up tomorrow. The postal strike in the UK won’t help the site too much but in the grand scheme we are somewhat irrelevant to the problems of businesses and the postal workers themselves.

You may have noticed a new Facebook Fan Page box on the site, it is my first attempt at a fan page but should grow in time, if you would like to become a fan that would be great! I am also working on a Flickr account to widen the audience, that should be up early November.

For people on the go, I am adding a mobile plugin to the site which will make the site read better on iphones and the like, let me know if you try it.

Once we have more postcards, I plan to create some form of map ‘mashup’ to display the cards and their locations but I haven’t worked out how yet.

OK this has to rival Ewan’s postcard for the most ‘non travel’ front but it made me laugh!

This postcard came from Dean, in the land of Islington. North London.

This is Dean’s second attempt to send a postcard, we have yet to see the first one. Maybe those postal strikes have it caught somewhere in the system.

So, Dean’s tip is:

When in Islington forego the trendy lure of Upper Street and head to the Holloway Road for excellent food at El Rincon Quiteno – Ecuadorian, tasty and very cool vibe.

This is a nice postcard. It is from Rye in East Sussex. The front of the postcard shows some nice scenes (Rye is yet another place I have never been.)

Greetings from historic Rye. Our travel tip: Hotels and guest homes will put the photos of their best rooms on their site – check what you are getting to avoid disappointment! (We have an avocado bathroom suite circa 1982!)

With the ’80′s back in fashion I am surprised they weren’t charged a premium for the bathroom suite! Oh well, hopefully it didn’t spoil their trip. Thanks for sending a postcard.

Southwold is a beautiful coastal town in Suffolk. Home to some increasingly posh shops, good hotels, restaurants and even the odd design agency. Southwold is a lovely place so I am delighted to get a postcard from Southwold. I think this qualifies as our official first postcard from the same county (finally!).

Now this postcard comes from Belfort in France. I had to look it up. Wikipedia says,

Belfort (German: Beffert) is a town and commune of north-eastern France, préfecture (capital) of the Territoire de Belfort département in the Franche-Comté région. Population (1999): 50,417. Approximately 60,000 including suburbs.

It is located on the Savoureuse, on the strategically important natural route between the Rhine and the Rhône – the Belfort Gap (Trouée de Belfort) or Burgundian Gate (Porte de Bourgogne).

So we’ve cleared that up. Now this postcard comes from Christian who runs his own postcard site – who knew! You know it is interesting. When I came up with this idea I thought no-one else was doing it. Well, they are, but slightly different. Christian’s site http://www.canyousendmeapostcard.com/ aims to collect as many postcards as possible and he scans both sides on. Cool.

Christian doesn’t offer a tip as such, except to visit his site. Fair enough. Thanks Christian!

Paris, possibly my favourite city in the world, after Edinburgh. We have this cool postcard send from Jordan.

This is a cool postcard, its the type of postcard you often found in Student poster shops, you know, where you can buy posters of giant reefers and stuff. I like it though

So, Jordan’s tip:

Buy some fresh bread and pastries and eat a picnic on the green under the Eiffel Tower

Hmm, that sounds nice – especially if the sun is shining! We seem to be getting a few food related tips recently, is this a trend? It makes me hungry reading them! Thanks Jordan.

It is great to see postcards coming in from different parts of the world, as we all as across the country. This morning’s postcard comes from Henry, showcasing Cornish Harbours.

The postcard says these are Boscastle, Mevagissey, Falmouth and Polperro. Is that clockwise? I have only been to Cornwall once in my life and saw Moushole which has a charming story about the Mousehole Cat and Star Gazey Pie.

Anyhoo, the tip today is more of a statement than a tip. Henry is clearly too cool for this postcard,

I haven’t got time to write this crap

which appears as a rubber stamp. I wonder if Henry keeps the stamp at the office? Hmm, I am starting to like the sound of that.. Thanks Henry!!

When I started asking for postcards I expected people to send postcards of places, or stunning views. I didn’t expect someone to send me a postcard of themselves! Not that I’m complaining – this postcard comes from the mighty Ewan Spence and his TPN Rock show. The postcard itself describes TPN Rock as “a weekly mp3 music show of the best unsigned and unknown rock music in the world.”

So, enough of the shameless promotion, here is Ewan’s tip:

When in Austin, the only place to eat is Magnolia’s Cafe on South Congress.
